Corps Open Day – Special Guest

Planning for this year’s Corps Open Day is well under way, and it’s already shaping up to be a day to remember as we can now confirm this year’s special guest.

Each year a well-known sports personality is invited to the Corps Open Day to do the prestiges job of presenting the annual sports awards. The sports awards recognise excellence and sporting achievements by serving members of the Corps.

And we can now announce that this year’s special guest will be Olympian Rebecca Romero!

Rebecca is known for being the first British athlete and second woman in history to win Olympic medals in two different sports at the Summer Olympic Games. 35 year old Rebecca has been a full time athlete since she graduated from university in 2002.

Romero has won world championships in both cycling and rowing; as a rower, she won a silver medal at the Athens 2004 Olympics in the quadruple sculls, and the following year was part of the British crew that won the 2005 World Championships in the quad sculls. Suffering from a persistent back injury, Romero retired from rowing in 2006.

Romero later took up track cycling, and made rapid progress in her new sport, specialising in track endurance events. In December 2006, in her international cycling debut, Romero won a silver medal in the pursuit at the UCI Track World Cup event in Moscow.

In the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Rebecca became the first ever British woman to compete in two different sports at the Olympic Games, when she rode in the individual pursuit. In winning the gold, she also became only the second woman in the world to win a medal in two different sports at the Summer Olympic Games.

The Corps Adjutant, Captain Bate said “The Corps HQ is looking forward to hosting Rebecca Romero MBE at the Corps Open Day Deepcut on 4th Jul. The double Olympic champion who displays determination, grit and a perseverance in equal measure is an example to us all and we look forward to the Corps joining us as she presents the RLC Sports Awards 2015.”
